Re- enact, create, imagine, produce, interpret, contextualise — these varied practices of circling back allow artists to forge new pathways towards greater understanding, critiquing, and healing of the past. Group exhibition RE- encourages viewers to embrace interpretive re-creations of personal and collective events as valuable forms of historical display, despite their innate subjectivity.
Exhibited artists present re-imaginations of events that are both old and new, factual and fictional, accurate and inaccurate. Slipping between binaries, the re-productions of memories, experiences, and shared histories in RE- are liminal; liberated from categorisation. Through physical embodiment and material manipulation, exhibited works repossess stolen stories, mend open wounds, uncover personal truths, and re-contextualise the past.
Bringing this inquisition to life are works by Branislav Jankic, Dana Melaver, Keemon Williams, Luce Nguyễn-Hunt, Lucia Tường Vy Nguyễn, Luka Mahmuljin Udovičić, Philippine de Salaberry, Reina Takeuchi, and Roslyn Orlando. Using their distinctive voices, each of these artists looks back in a quest to look further out, and in.
